Covering Your Wednesday: Bluegrass Special

For today’s Covering Your Wednesday, I picked out two bands that take a popular song from an entirely different genre, and make it their own. The first is a rendition of The Grateful Dead’s “Franklin’s Tower” by Jesse McReynolds. Jesse is known as “Mr. Mandolin” in the bluegrass duo he shares with his brother, Jim. He takes one of the Dead’s biggest hits and puts his own spin on it, filling it with his notorious mando and unique voice. My second pick is from the rapidly up-and-coming “newgrass” band, Tampled by Turtles. In their cover of the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind,” they do exactly what Jesse has done, but take it to a new level. They take the dark, punk sound of the Pixies and substitute in their well-known wailing fiddle, and more; and even with a slow grass tune like this one, the Turtles still get you moving. So while your listening to this on your rainy Wednesday, simply “roll away the dew” and enjoy.
